Porn: What I Wish I Had Known Before The Start Of Breaking The Habit

  • This is a war, not a battle. Battles only last a little while; wars go on until one side concedes or is wiped out. Not every battle must be won to win a war. In fact, the enemy can often be defeated simply because you refuse to stop fighting. Imagine you are the addiction for a moment . . . there’s a person you can defeat but who refuses to stay down. Sometimes he/she wins and tells you no, but even when you win he gets right back up and builds another fence to keep you out. She makes an appointment to see a therapist. He signs up for accountability software. No matter how many times you win she refuses to accept defeat. You will be defeated eventually because you cannot attack every second of every day, and (if he is committed) he will eventually wear you down. You may never grow tired of winning, but you will get tired of having a broken nose.
  • If you are willing to do whatever it takes, you will.
  • If you aren’t prepared to do whatever it takes, you won’t. Getting porn-free (or any addiction) won’t happen accidentally.
  • You need help, and telling someone else is a great start.
  • Exercising your self control muscle in other areas can help. Where can you start telling yourself no? In fact, go start Jiu Jitsu now. You will go to learn how to control others, but you’ll get a lot better at controlling yourself in the process.
  • Even when you’re winning the battle there will always be an element of saying no to part of your mind.
  • Accountability software can be a huge help. Here is my favorite.
  • Healthy relationships of all types will go a long way towards winning the war.
  • Alone time is not your friend; I realize you need some, but I’m suggesting limits, not elimination.
  • Future you will thank you.
