I’d like to share a trick with anyone else who finds falling asleep difficult. It’s really just a pick and choose from meditation. I seldom go by “recipes” but rather borrow and modify.
I’ve dealt with anxiety for as long as I can remember but used to fall asleep easily. I’ve had to make adjustments over the past year-ish or else I’ll usually lay there furious until I pass out exhausted.
Maybe it’s age? More likely poor choices during the day… regardless!
Imagine laying in bed, sleepy, when your mind starts to wander off to all the little worrisome spots.
Now, try to catch it before it gathers steam, and just focus on your breath.
I actually say (in my mind) to myself: “Breathe in.” “Breathe out.” That’s it really; I just make myself focus on that. Apparently it works quite often since I can’t remember doing it long.
It’s not always enough if I’m not very sleepy to start with, and there are plenty of times I have to catch my mind several times as it veers back towards tomorrow, budgeting, career, or whatever.
This won’t be magic for everybody, but it helps me. And I know I’m not the only one.
